Art Class Instructors

Richard Abraham was born and raised surrounded by the beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He studied at The Atelier, The Bougie Studio and H&P Studios. Richard explores the Great Lakes region for subject matter, as well as Hawaii, Mexico and Italy. He is represented by The Grand Hill Gallery in St. Paul; Kelly Galleries in Hudson, Wisconsin; and Swan Song Contemporary Art in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin. www.richardabraham.com

Marian Alstad has led painting workshops in and outside of the United States, including Baja, MX, coastal towns of France, Italy, Hallifax, Nova Scotia, Taos and Santa Fe, NM, Ireland and Costa Rica. She teaches students of all skill levels and is a knowledgeable and positive instructor, supporting her students one-on-one and in group critiques. Art is her life’s passion. She has won many awards in juried shows.

Mary Axelson did postgraduate studies in painting and drawing at the University of Minnesota and St. Thomas University. She has taught watercolor painting for many years.

Kim Bakken-Parr used her fascination with seeing how things worked by becoming a high school Chemistry teacher, as well as a jewelry artist. She notes: “Keeping my jewelry to one of a kind pieces, I keep expanding my creativity. It is through this creativity and self-expression I get to share myself with others.” She is Level I & II certified in Precious Metal Clay. 

Vicki Barth has taught botanical illustration for the past five years at the Minnesota School of Botanical, Minneapolis Public Schools Community Education, and through private lessons. Her paintings and drawings were included in an exhibition of regional botanical art at the BAC in 2009.

Jim Boles is a glass artist, who works in glass, metal and wood mixed media. He enjoys teaching not only technical aspects of glass-making, but “the fun of it.”  jimbolesdesigns.com

Fred Dingler is a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and has had a successful career in illustration. He is an acclaimed and award-winning painter in watercolor and oil. www.dinglerart.com

Janelle Doyle is a licensed K-12 visual arts teacher with five years of secondary classroom experience and over ten years of museum education experience. Her degrees include a Master of Arts degree in Art Education and a Baccalaureate degree in Art (drawing and painting) and Art History. She worked in the education division at the Science Museum of Minnesota s and has taught community-based arts programs with Walker Art Center, Saint Paul Public Schools, and East Side Arts Council. She teaches currently at Saint Thomas Academy, a college preparatory school in Mendota Heights. 

Stu Fjellanger holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He worked as an independent illustrator known for linoleum-cut prints. His oil paintings have been exhibited in a number of galleries and public spaces, and are held in many private
collections. He recently began work in an MFA in Illustration program (a limited residency program) at the Hartford Art School. www.studiofmtrauts.com

Jennifer Galvelis is a painter, printmaker, ceramicist and teacher who lives in Minneapolis.  She earned her M.S. in Art & Design Education from Pratt Institute (Brooklyn, NY), and her B.F.A. from West Chester University of Pennsylvania.  She works with all age groups, and her projects promotecreativity and collaboration. www.jsgalvelis.com

Scott Garver writes: “It intrigues me that the randomness and the flow of the glass will take you down the long road of constant education and learning that beautiful things can come from organized chaos. I first took a class from Nancy Campbell in 1994 making soft glass beads. I started lampworking borosilicate glass shortly after that, making bracelets and pendants … I decided to go to the New Orleans School of Glass Works in the fall of 1995 and studied there for three years.” www.gobletsoffire.net

Leslie Granbeck is an accomplished beader whose work took a new direction when she discovered the technique for turning wool fibers into beads and jewelry. She’s intrigued by color and texture, noting that “feltmaking is magical. Imagine turning simple wool fibers into beautiful scarves, purses, slippers – even garments.” She teaches a variety of feltmaking techniques at such organizations as the Elk River Arts Alliance, ArtiCulture and the South Dakota Art Museum.

Christopher Kelly teaches classes in glass blowing and fusing to adults and youth. He owns FKArt Glass in Minneapolis.

Evelyn Klein is a freelance writer, teacher, artist and writing judge who teaches at the Loft Literary Center, Century College and BTAC. She published the poetry memoir, From Here Across the Bridge, illustrated by her father, Wolfgang Klein, with Nodin Press in 2006. North Star Press released her latest book, Once Upon a Neighborhood, in 2009.

Brandon Kuehn has painted landscapes for over 20 years. He received his B.F.A from the University of Minnesota in 1997, and is currently an M.F.A. student at the Art Institute of Boston and will graduate with his Master’s in 2011. He has exhibited his work regionally and is currently a featured artist at the Waters of Superior Gallery in Duluth, MN.

Jes Lee shoots with a wide variety of cameras, including medium format film, instant, and digital. She enjoys spending time in the darkroom, and has at least one camera with her at all times. Her one-person show, “Digital Dreams of Life,” will be on view in the Atrium Gallery at the art center September 23– November 14. In her photographs, she creates layered images that challenge the viewer to look further and discover a memory from the past, or an inkling of what the future might hold.

Judy Lieber draws with pastel and other graphic materials. She specializes in portraits and drawing caricatures of clients for corporate and private events, as well as for classes in regional art centers.

Rebecca McPeek studied ceramics at University of Minnesota and drawing at St. Ives School of Painting, Cornwall, England, and is a member of Northwoods Pioneer Gallery, an artist cooperative in Castle Danger, MN.

Jennifer Maroney loves the accessibility and immediacy of the journal. She teaches and  blogs, defining her approach as: “Art Journaling is a verb that describes what happens when you take a journal/diary combined with a sketchbook, throw in a dash of scrapbooking, add photos and collage and if you'd like–paint over it, draw or doodle. Some people journal each day's events, some journal single ideas, others make elaborate maps of their dreams for the future – it can be whatever you want it to be. Heidi E. Nelson has a talent for, and greatly enjoys, teaching students of all ages and abilities in a methodical, step-by-step way with lots of demonstrations. She teaches drawing and painting in all mediums. Heidi has a B.F.A. degree in oil painting and for 16 years worked in graphic design and commercial illustration. www.mnartists.org

Stephen Nesser, MFA, has paintings in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution; the International Women's Air and Space Museum; the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum (Germany); and Air Venture Museum, among others. He has received several Best of Show awards for his watercolor paintings, and participated in both group and solo exhibitions. (stephennesser.com)

Elizabeth Olken-Hunt received a B.A. in Art History and a Master's in Elementary Education. She holds a Montessori teaching certification for early childhood as well as a 1-6 elementary Minnesota teaching license. Lizzie has taught at the Friends School of Minnesota, St. Paul Academy, Sunny Hollow Montessori and was the program and arts exhibit coordinator for Young Audiences of Minnesota. Lizzie is a lead Abrakadoodle teacher, specializing in toddler and preschool classes. When not teaching, Lizzie can often be found drawing and painting at the Edina and Bloomington Art Centers or exploring the world with her second grade twins.

Mary Jean Port has taught writing at Concordia College-Moorhead, the University of Minnesota-Morris, the Loft, and in the U of M Compleat Scholar Program. Her work has appeared in Flyway, Iowa Woman, Loonfeather, and other journals.

Emily Sheehan holds an M.F.A. in Visual Studies from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She teaches figure and foundation drawing at MCAD, and beginning sculpture at St. John’s University in Collegeville. She has served, in 2009 and 2010, as a visiting art instructor at Ramalynn Montessori Academy in Bloomington, working with students ages 6 – 14.

Katie Sherman received her BFA in ceramics from the University of Evansville in 2001 and obtained her teaching license from Minnesota State University. She has exhibited and sold her art in Montana, Indiana, and Minnesota, and has taught a variety of classes in art centers, schools, and universities. The last few years she has been at a Spanish immersion school in Minneapolis.  She loves seeing the enthusiasm and intensity both children and adults display as they are in the midst of the creative process.

Cynthia Starkweather-Nelson holds an M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a B.F.A. from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb. She’s been drawing, painting and creating prints for over 30 years. The Peter M. Holly Stone has created murals and set designs for local organizations, including a mural on permanent display in the Becker Community Center in Becker MN. She is experienced in a variety of painting media.

David Swenson is Studio Manager of the Clay Studio at the Bloomington Theatre and Art Center. He received his B.F.A. in studio ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. He received a grant from the Fogelberg Fellowship program as a working artist at the Northern Clay Center in 2009.

Tracie Thompson is an artist and naturalist, and a recent transplant from Florida to Minnesota. She is a professional muralist, and teaches drawing classes. www.traciethompson.com

Laurie Toth holds her B.F.A. degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She studied painting with Birney Quick at MCAD and the Grand Marais Art Colony, and teaches pastel painting in the Metro area and on the Minnesota’s North Shore.

Tom Tyler has received many awards for his paintings, and creates an informal, inviting environment in his classes.

Catherine Urdahl’s first picture book, Emma’s Question, was published in spring 2009 by Charlesbridge. Troy Williams is a ceramics artist; he received his B.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Yuming Zhu lives and works in the Seattle area. Originally from Shanghai, China, he began studying painting under master artists at age ten. He teaches sumi painting and calligraphy in colleges and art centers, as well as through regional and national sumi organizations.
